NEW POLICY: Mandatory Student ID Use for Palm Beach County School Board

Policy to be approved at the next meeting of the Palm Beach County School Board. Parents must be charged for replacements, except homeless.

Identification cards will include the suicide prevention phone number. Parental consent not required.

BOCA RATON, FL ( (Copyright © 2022 MetroDesk Media, LLC) – All Palm Beach County Public School students, including kindergarten students, are about to wear a coin identity at all times. Students will be entitled to a replacement ID card. Additional cards may require families to pay. Homeless students are exempt from the fee policy.

The mandatory ID card policy formalizes what has been a patchwork of rules and regulations in the Palm Beach County School District for several years. Some schools sometimes required ID, some did not. While many middle and high schools required name badges to be worn for several years, most elementary schools did not. This will change with the new policy. Every student in every school in the Palm Beach School District, regardless of age or grade, will be required to carry the ID.

The cards will contain basic student information as well as the phone number for the National Suicide Prevention Hotline. We publish the full policy below. Here’s a highlight:

“Badges can display the student’s current school, name/preferred name as it appears in the SIS system, photo, and school district-issued student number. Notwithstanding Board Policy 5.50, parental consent is not required to display the above directory information on the student ID badge. In accordance with Section 1008.386, Fla. Stat, the National Suicide Prevention Hotline should be printed, or on a label affixed, to the back of the ID badge.

Read the full ID policy below. The school board is expected to approve the policy at its September 7 meeting.
