Certain documents are required when traveling abroad

Detailed Information

St. Maarten and St.. Martin are both popular tourism destinations, and visitors are made to feel welcome, but there are some documents travelers will need to present before entering the country.

Travelers should always carry a valid passport on them when traveling out of the country to ensure a smooth passage through customs. St. Maarten and St. Martin officials will accept a government issued photo I.D. and an official birth certificate with a raised seal, but customs agents prefer vacationers have a passport. Any of these forms of documentation will allow U.S. and British citizens to stay on the island for up to three months.

Along with a passport or other acceptable documentation, travelers will be required to provide an address of where they will be staying on the island, and a round-trip or onward transit ticket as proof of return as well as proof of sufficient funds for their stay.

With their white sand beaches and beautiful scenery, St. Maarten and St. Martin are the perfect romantic getaway spots. But actually tying the knot on the island can be a difficult procedure.

It is not recommended that vacationers try to get married while on the French side of the island unless you're a French citizens, because the paperwork and requirements are too difficult. Getting married in Dutch St. Maarten is considerably easier, couples will just need to present these documents:

  • The bride and groom both need to have an official birth certificate with a raised seal

  • A declaration of marital status is required for both bride and groom, stating that they are both single.

  • Couples must be at least 21 years of age to marry in St. Maarten.

  • Legal address of both bride and groom must be provided.

  • The couple must be on the island for at least a week before they can get married.

  • Death or divorce certificates must be presented if either the bride or groom has been married before.

  • A valid passport is required from both parties.

To insure a hassle-free arrival on St. Maarten/St. Martin, travelers should remember to bring the proper documentation which will allow vacationers to enjoy all of the beauty and excitement the island has to offer.
