Enjoy music and company aboard a"jitney"

Travel With Company

Bus travel in the Caribbean is often a colorful and exciting experience, and on Sint Maarten and St. Martin, the privately owned jitneys will carry up to 12 or 14 passengers on major routes throughout the island while playing energizing zouk music.

Many native islanders use jitneys as a cheap means of transportation, and these small buses usually run from about 7 a.m. in the morning to midnight along serving the major destinations on the island, from Philipsburg, to Marigot Bay, to Grand Case, and Simpson Bay. Buses should have their destination posted on the vehicle, and passengers who are not in primary pick up spots in major destinations can simply flag a bus down.

Buses can be sometimes be crowded, as passengers loads are usually only 10 to 14 people. Service to more remote areas is not always available or reliable, but fares will only run from $1.50(USD) to $3(USD), making this option very affordable.

For vacationers who are not doing extensive touring of the island and simply want to take a leisurely day trip to another major tourist destination, buses are a cheap way of getting around. They also provide the advantage of immersing a traveler even more in the island life of St. Martin and Sint Maarten.
