Golf courses in St. Martin/St. Maarten adhere to the old adage that quality is more important than quantity. St. Maarten is home to the only golf course on the entirety of the island, but the easily crossable boarder means that St. Martin's visitors can play through.
Experienced golfers who are looking for a larger variety can choose to visit some of the nearby islands and tee off on their greens. Anguilla has two golf courses, and can be reached by ferry. For more of a challenge, St. Croix, St. Kitts, and St. Thomas are accessible by a short plane ride. Click here to read about air travel.
Mullet Bay Golf Course is an 18-hole course located near the Princess Juliana International Airport on the Dutch side of the island. Designed by Joseph Lee, the course surrounds a lagoon, and is speckled with palm trees and other tropical flowers.
The course is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays to nonmembers, costing $52(USD) for nine holes and $92(USD) for 18. Cart rentals are also available on site. Note that there is no in-house pro, and no driving range at Mullet Bay.
For further details, contact the Mullet Bay Golf Course at 599-545-3069 or 599-545-2801.
The St. Martin Golf Association (SMGA) was founded in 1990. The SMGA is in charge of maintaining the Mullet Bay Golf Course and promoting the game of golf. While Mullet Bay is only open to nonmembers on Tuesdays and Thursdays, SMGA members are welcome to use the course every day of the week.
A membership costs $50(USD) a year, and includes a ticket to the annual Christmas dinner.
The SMGA hosts golf events throughout the year to entice players to get out on the green, as well as to raise funds to give back to the community. There is at least one medaled event each month, as well as several tournaments.
The largest tournament hosted by the SMGA is the St. Maarten Open, which occurs each year at the end of April. Golfers come from around the world to compete for the grand prize of $100 thousand.
Members of the St. Martin Golf Association are also eligible to enter golf tournaments on 11 other Caribbean Islands, so long as the event is hosted by the Eastern Caribbean Golf Association. Because of this, many members of the association do not even live on St. Martin/St. Maarten.
Whether you want to schedule a Tuesday or Thursday tee time at the Mullet Bay Golf Course, or catch a ferry or plane to another island for a more advanced course, golfing during your St. Martin/St. Maarten vacation is an activity that may require a little advanced planning. Still, if golf is your passion, playing a round with a Caribbean island as your back drop is the chance of a lifetime, and certainly one you won't want to miss.
