Hotel in St. Martin

One island with two very distinct cultures. That's what visitors will experience on the breathtakingly beautiful island of St. Martin/Sint Maarten. From quaint and quiet French properties to lively and luxurious Dutch high-rises, both parts of the island have hotels and resorts that will meet most vacationers' accommodations needs.

Sint Maarten

Dutch Sint Maarten is home to many of the larger resorts, several with attached casinos, and is perfect for adventure filled vacations. Visitors will be occupied with excellent duty free shopping in Philipsburg, swimming in Simpson bay, and plenty of nightlife around town.

On this part of the island vacationers will have to pay between 5 and 8 percent government tax, and a 10 to 15 percent service charge, which will be added onto the final bill. The prices of St. Maarten accommodations range from very expensive to moderately priced.

St. Martin

French St. Martin hosts smaller more intimate and secluded accommodations, perfect for vacationers seeking rest and relaxation. Guests will find the best dining on the island in Grand Case, a clothing optional beach at Orient Bay, and excellent boutique shopping in Marigot.

The service charge for hotels in St. Martin is 10 percent and the rooms on this part of the island have a taxe de sejour, or visitors' tax, which varies from hotel to hotel depending on the type of accommodations. Usually the charge is about $4(USD) a day.

Accommodation Styles and Rates

Typically, the island's most expensive rooms are exclusive and private, featuring lavish architecture and luxurious amenities. The French St. Martin boasts hotels and resorts that have exquisite furnishings and grand landscaping. Travelers staying in expensive lodgings on either side of the island can expect to pay anywhere from $210(USD) to $850(USD) per night.

Guests vacationing on a budget will be pleased to know that they too can enjoy some of the finer amenities that hotels and resorts have to offer—without emptying their wallets. Hotels on both the French and Dutch side of the island have accommodations especially designed for travelers who seek a mixture of value and comfort.

Charming inns and guesthouses provide cozy and comfortable rooms for around $80 to $190(USD) per night. Travelers should be aware, though, that budget hotels don't always offer the amenities you might expect. Some value lodgings are simple, with few extra activities available; when making reservations at these hotels be sure to inquire about amenities that are important to you.

Two Cultures, One Long List of Choices

Not only can you choose between several lodging styles, you also have your pick between the exciting, Dutch-influenced half of the island, and the exclusive, quiet French side.
